Additional resources committed to Iowa highways, interstates this Thanksgiving weekend

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Beginning today and running through Saturday, Nov. 30, the Department of Public Safety, State Patrol Division is committing extra resources to patrolling Iowa's interstates and highways.

Troopers will be watching for excessive speed, seat belt usage and drivers operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

During last years' same Thanksgiving enforcement effort, the Iowa State Patrol responded to six accidents that resulted in eight fatalities.

Iowa State Patrol Major Darrell Cox commented, "No family should lose a loved one during the holidays.  But unfortunately, the Thanksgiving holiday continues to be one of the deadliest holidays on Iowa roadways.  We're committed to having extra Troopers out on the road this weekend.  We want to increase our visibility as a deterrent to aggressive or careless drivers."

Also in 2007, the State Patrol netted 42 OWI arrests, 29 open container citations, 2,122 speed citations, 362 seatbelt citations, 53 child restraint citations and 344 other moving violation citations over the long holiday weekend.
