Town turns speeders into Santas

SANSOM PARK, Texas (AP) -- Police officers in Sansom Park, Texas, will spread some holiday cheer to drivers who may have been naughty.

For the next month and depending on what they've done, some of the drivers pulled over in the Fort Worth suburb won't be getting a normal ticket. Instead, Officer Daniel Martinez says they'll be given a "ticket for tots," which encourages drivers to drop off a $10 toy at the Sansom Park police station.

Martinez tells Dallas-Fort Worth television station KTVT that in the low-income community "a lot of the kids are not going to have a Christmas at all."

Drivers won't be required to follow through on the donation, but police hope that if they're given a break, they'll return the kindness.

Police say the average traffic ticket in Sansom Park runs about $165.
