Man sentenced for defrauding eastern Iowa woman

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- A New York man has been sentenced to more than six years in prison for defrauding an elderly Iowa woman.

George Tonks of Brooklyn, N.Y., pleaded guilty in August to two counts of wire fraud.

Authorities say the 41-year-old admitted that beginning in July 2002 he participated with others in a fraud scheme that targeted an elderly Tama County woman.

Prosecutors say the woman was contacted by telephone repeatedly and told she had won a cash sweepstakes prize but to get it, she needed to wire to New York taxes and other advance fees.

Authorities say Tonks and the other schemers took over $200,000 from the woman.

Tonks was also ordered to pay more than $264,000 in restitution to the victim.

Two other people have been convicted of wire fraud in the case.
