Iowa basketball escapes Oakland University

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Freshman Anthony Tucker scored 19 points and Iowa hung on to beat Oakland 66-57 on Sunday night.

Jake Kelly added 16 points for the Hawkeyes, who pulled away with a late 9-0 run and picked up their fourth straight win.

Drew Maynard hit a wide-open 3 to cut Iowa's lead to four with 3:29 left, and Johnathon Jones hit a pair of free throws to make it 53-51. But Jones rimmed out a jumper after Oakland had forced a turnover, and Tucker responded with a 3 that pushed Iowa's lead back to 56-51.

Iowa (4-0) hit six free throws to go up 62-51 with 46 seconds left.

Jones had 21 points and Erik Kangas had 18 to lead the Golden Grizzlies (1-3).

Oakland got within 42-41 on a 3 by Kangas midway through the second half. Kelly followed a Cyrus Tate basket with a 3 to push Iowa's lead to 47-41 with 7:30 left, and Tucker buried a long 3 to make it 52-43.

The loss caps a brutal week for the road-weary Golden Grizzlies, who won at Oregon on Nov. 17 and lost at Syracuse on Friday night.
