Panthers pick up #3 seed in FCS playoffs

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- This time it was the committee's turn.  The UNI football team had done everything they needed to do finishing 10-2 on the season.

Sunday night, Panther fans gathered in the McLeod Center to learn their playoff fate.  An ecstatic ovation broke out when they learned their Panthers had picked up the #3 overall seed and would play host to the Maine Black Bears in the first round.

For head coach Mark Farley, the high seed came as a nice surprise.

"We came into the season just hoping to get a football team into the playoffs and be a contender for the conference," said Farley.  "This was a team that made themselves into a 3rd seed."

Offensive lineman Bob Swift added, "to be in this position is a huge honor.  We're excited to play at home and kick this thing off in the dome."

What the #3 seed means is if the Panthers keep winning, they're guaranteed at least 2 homes games and possibly a third if second seeded Appalachian State were to lose prior to the national semi-finals.

Plus, with Southern Illinois in the same corner of the bracket, there's a chance the Panthers could avenge their earlier loss to the Salukis if they make the second round.
