Lawsuits filed in Charles City fireworks accident

CHARLES CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Four people injured in a July 4 fireworks mishap in Charles City have filed lawsuits against the operating company in Iowa District Court.

They claim that J&M Displays didn't properly train its operators, and seek damages for injuries suffered when a shell malfunction set off fireworks into the crowd, injuring at least 37 people.

Each is seeking damages for injuries suffered, medical expenses, lost wages and limited earning capacity in the future.

The lawsuit also claims that J&M removed its equipment before the state fire marshal could conduct a full investigation.

In September, the fire marshal's office said one or more shells probably detonated in their launch tubes, which then caused secondary explosions.
