Great Turkey Giveaway helps families

Dubuque (KWWL) -- The holidays can normally be an expensive time of year. A down economy and high food prices this year may make it more expensive, but one Dubuque church is making sure families have food on their Thanksgiving tables.

For the sixth year, the Dubuque Assembly of God gave out 100 free Thanksgiving meals.

"We got a turkey and stuffing. Potatoes. Vegetables, cookies," Tammy Lynch said.

Church leaders got the idea of the Great Turkey Giveaway from another Assembly of God church in Des Moines.

"It's our opportunity to reach out to the community of Dubuque, and let people know we love them, and God loves them and give them a little bit of dignity for their Thanksgiving. Give them everything they need to make a great Thanksgiving day meal," Pastor Terry Bemis said.

Anyone could register through the turkey hotline, attend a Sunday service, and walk away with a full meal.

"It was a little piece in the advertisement, and it said that you're welcome to come to the church for a Thanksgiving dinner, and that's what we did. We really enjoyed coming here. It was refreshing," Lynch said.

This year's turkey giveaway brought more than 150 visitors through the doors.

"Every year it's more and this year was the quickest. It filled up the fastest this year than any other year. And we had more people this year than in the past, and with the economy, we assumed that would happen," Bemis said. "They can just go home and have time with their family and friends. Gather around the table and truly be thankful this Thanksgiving."
