Skiing in their own backyard

By Lauren Squires

DUBUQUE (KWWL) - With winter weather upon us, many skiers are anxiously awaiting for local slopes to open. Some are making use of what they've got in order to have a little "pre season" practice.

Will Welter and Russell Kalvelage are avid skiers.

"This is actually where I learned how to ride at Sundown; it's a good place to learn," said Welter.

When they heard Sundown Ski Resort was making snow they took advantage of it.

"The wind was working in my favor," said Welter.

Favoring enough to blow more than two truck beds of snow onto the road and across the street.

"Early season just got that itch, you need to get rid of it and wanna ride. Do whatever ti takes," said Welter.

So they moved the snow into their own backyard. That's because these diehards couldn't wait for the slops to open.

"It's got like sticks and stuff in it but we'll clean those out or just ride over them. It's alright for early season. I'll deal with it," said Welter.

"If today doesn't work out the snow isn't going anywhere for awhile. It looks like it's gonna be a cold one, for the rest of winter," said Kalvelage.

And until the slops open, you'll find these guys here giving new meaning to "right here in your own backyard."

Weather pending Sundown is expected to open later this month.
