DOWN TO EARTH: UI students create water purifier

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- The World Health Organization reports that one sixth of the world's population doesn't have access to safe drinking water, spreading disease and death. Students at the University of Iowa are trying to change that.

They developed a hand-held water sanitizing device that creates safe water in the palm of your hand. The $5 hand-held device disinfects water by producing bleach from salt water, which then removes contaminants from the water.

This kit allows people in poorer countries to assemble it themselves with found materials, such as discarded plastic water bottles. The students were recognized by the EPA and Discover magazine has called it one of the 10 Simple Things That Can Change the World.
