MONEY MATTERS: Turkey industry suffering before Thanksgiving

SUMNER (KWWL) - Thanksgiving is less than a week away and, the turkey industry, like so many other businesses, is struggling to get by.

In 2007 it cost $9 to feed a turkey, now it costs $22. That makes it hard for farmers to buy feed and predict what their costs will be.

Mike Keithe runs a turkey farm in Sumner. He says high feed prices make it impossible to run a business. Keithe usually raises 200,000 turkeys, but because of rising costs, next year he will have to cut back to 80,000.
