Turkey farmers struggle

SUMNER (KWWL) -- Thanksgiving is less than a week away and, the turkey industry, like so many other businesses, is struggling to get by.

In 2007 it cost $9 to feed a turkey, now it costs $22.

That makes it hard for farmers to buy feed and to be able to predict what their costs will be.

"It makes it impossible for sales...the processors what price they need to go in to make their sales at and it makes it a crap shoot out there in trying to run a business," Mike Kuethe said.

Kuethe usually raises 200,000 turkeys, but because of rising costs, next year he will have to cut back to 120,000.
