Keokuk man accused of stealing from public groups

KEOKUK, Iowa (AP) - A Keokuk man accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from public entities has been charged with ongoing criminal conduct, money laundering and three counts of first-degree theft.

Prosecutors say the charges against Douglas Atterberg stem from a four-month investigation. It focused on allegations that Atterberg stole money while serving as a treasurer for the United Presbyterian Church, Lee County Historical Society and Keokuk Community Fine Arts Council.

According to investigators, Atterberg mishandled about $144,000 of the church's money from December 2001 to July of this year. The fine arts council and historical council accuse him of stealing more than $40,000 from each organization.

In September, the church filed a civil lawsuit against Atterberg.
