Johnson's death penalty appeal denied

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected an appeal from a Forest City woman who wanted a review of her convictions and sentences in the drug-related murders of five people, including two small children.

Angela Johnson was convicted by a federal jury in May 2005 of 10 counts of murder in furtherance of a drug conspiracy. She was sentenced to the death penalty on eight of the 10 counts, which involved the premeditated murder of a 6 and 10-year-old sisters, their mother and Johnson's former boyfriend. She received life sentence for her role in the murder of a fifth victim, a federal witness.

The murders occurred in the summer and fall of 1993. The victims were found buried in shallow graves in rural Cerro Gordo County.
