Iowa AG says cigarette consumption at 50 year low

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller says smoking is down and attitudes about tobacco have changed for the better.

Sunday marks the 10-year anniversary of the Master Settlement Agreement, a settlement with the large tobacco companies. Miller credits the MSA for decreasing cigarette consumption to its lowest level since before 1950.

Iowa benefitted financially from the MSA, receiving more than $540 million to date. Some of that money has been used to fund tobacco control programs.

Thursday is also the yearly Great American Smokeout, a day when health organizations promote programs to quit smoking.
