Red Cross helps fire victims

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- One person is dead and eleven others are without a home after a late night fire.

Rescuers were called to A avenue northeast just after ten o'clock Monday night.  74-year-old Bob Booker was pulled from the house by rescuers, but he later died.

The house was split into eight living units; twelve people were living there.

The Red Cross is providing help for those who made it through,  providing them with the essentials for survival.   That includes food, clothing, and a few nights stay in a few area hotels.

The Red Cross says this is a tough situation and it's inevitable that some people who suffered through the summer flood will also lose things to fires.

Jennifer Pickar says Red Cross funding takes a hit in the winter.

"The fall and winter are tough times with getting out financial assistance for things like home fires," Pickar said.  "It's a tough time in the community the people have stepped up and have been giving and we hope that continues."
