Law enforcement focus on safe holiday travel

Posted:

IOWA CITY (KWWL)-- As the Thanksgiving travel period gets closer, the Iowa Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau will support over 300 law enforcement agencies across the state in order to encourage drivers to drive safe.

Iowa City Police Department will be participating in the statewide enforcement initiative coordinated by the Iowa Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau.

This effort is the first special Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) for the 2008 calendar year, and will take place Nov. 23-30. Officers will be focusing on enforcing speed, seat belts, and drunk drivers.

According to the Traffic Safety Bureau, during the 2007 Thanksgiving holiday, there were 13 crashes with 16 fatalities and 3 of those were alcohol related.
