Police release name of fire victim

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- One person is dead and eleven others without a home after a late night fire.

Rescuers were called to A Avenue NE just after 10 p.m. Monday night.

74-year-old Bobby Booker died at the hospital after crews pulled him from a second floor bedroom.

The residential home had eight rental units, seven of which were occupied at the time of the fire. Nine adults and two children did get out safely without injury.

An investigation by the fire department determined that the fire originated in a front second floor bedroom located in the southwest corner of the building. Booker was found on the floor beneath a fire escape window in a rear second floor bedroom.

According to the investigation, the smoke alarms were functioning. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.

This is the first residential fire fatality in Cedar Rapids since Dec. 1, 2004.
