Economy on minds as Hawkeye fans make bowl plans

IOWA CITY (KWWL) - With the thoughts of another harsh winter on the way, many Hawkeye fans would love nothing more than to head south for the holidays.

Once again, Iowa fans had to sweat it out until the final play Saturday. Now some are sweating the cost of following the team to a bowl game.

"I think it's going to be a little bit of a case study that we're going to find out exactly how much the economy is going to play an effect on this," said Iowa Alumni Association president Vince Nelson.

"Warmth, going to Florida or Texas would be awfully nice to do," said Hawkeye fan Chris Anderson.

Anderson has been a Hawk fan all her life. She is already working on ways to make it to her first bowl game.

"Well we have a really good crew of tailgaters and I know a bunch of 'em are thinking of driving down and hanging out together, sharing the load of driving so yeah, that would be a consideration as opposed to flying," said Anderson.

With gas prices shrinking and flight costs rising, Iowa Alumni Association president Vince Nelson thinks more people may be likely to drive. He says hundreds of fans have responded to their bowl interest survey.

"There does appear to be significant interest," said Nelson.  "Now does that translate into actually traveling?"

Last year's long, cold winter and the fact the Hawks didn't make a bowl are also factors that could offset the poor economy. That's why as Nelson puts it, when all is said and done, he expects to see a stadium with lots of black and gold.
