North Liberty well drilling underway

NORTH LIBERTY (KWWL) -- The City of North Liberty has broken ground for a new well necessary to improve the municipal water service.

The new well, which is being constructed by Layne-Western Company, is located between Sadler Drive and South Front Street north of Vandello Drive.

North Liberty City Administrator Ryan Heier noted, "While there will be some disruptions in the area immediately surrounding the construction, we home residents will bear with us as we make these necessary improvements."

Sections of the nearby recreation trail may be closed so water can be brought into and taken out of the site while the construction is being performed. The water disposal will affect Muddy Creek. The city has worked with the Iowa Department of Natural resources to alleviate any possible environmental impact. While the water may appear cloudy at times, the particulate matter suspended in the water is inert and will not harm the fish, plants or other aquatic life dependent on the creek.

Residents may also notice construction noise, but the city has put strict decibel limits on the sound in an effort to minimize the noise impact. Drilling is scheduled to continue through the end of the year and construction may take place 24 hours a day. If noise exceeds the prescribed sound levels, construction will be limited to 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. There will be no construction on Sundays.
