Harlston sentenced to 50 years

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- Kenyatta Harlston was sentenced to 50 years in jail Monday morning.

Harlston was found guilty of Second Degree Murder last month. He was convicted of stabbing Nicholas Blackburn, 24, last August outside a Central Avenue Bar. The trial was held in Black Hawk County due to extensive media coverage.

The sentencing took about ten minutes. The judge called the murder a "senseless crime." Blackburn's fiance, Cher Finzel, delivered a victim impact statement where she said she would never forgive Harlston and said she hopes he suffers forever.

Harlston's attorney read an apology on behalf of Harlston where he expressed love her his family and for Jesus.

"I'm just glad that he got the whole 50 years and it's over with, cause he definitely deserved it. We've been waiting for this for a long time. It's almost been 15 months, so I'm relieved," Finzel said.

Harlston will have to serve 35 years before being eligible for parole. He will also have to pay $150,000 in restitution to the Blackburn's as part of a civil penalty.
