Tribute concert for Mark Weiger

IOWA CITY (KWWL) - Friends and colleagues are paying tribute to a University of Iowa music professor who committed suicide earlier this week.

Mark Weiger died of carbon monoxide poisoning Wednesday night.  He was found in his car in the garage of his Iowa City home.  His suicide comes after a lawsuit from a former student accusing him of sexual harassment.

Sunday, the University of Iowa Chamber Orchestra performed a concert in Macbride Hall, in recognition of Weiger's contributions.  Director of Orchestral Studies William Larue Jones
says in Weiger's two decades at the University of Iowa, he was an excellent studio teacher and performer.  Jones says Weiger accomplished many other things in his time there.

"He also served as associate director for the school of music, and had a lot to do with being able to recruit students, both personally and financially," said William Larue Jones.

A tribute was given midway through the concert by Alan Macvey, Director of the Division of Performing Arts.  He says he will remember Weiger as an artist, and a professional.

A memorial service for Weiger is being planned for next month.
