America Recycles Day in Iowa City

IOWA CITY (KWWL) - Due to the summer Floods of 2008, area landfills are expected to see more garbage this year.  In an average year, more than 125 tons of garbage are sent to the Iowa City landfill.

Saturday, some people looked to see what they could do to reduce that amount as part of America Recycles Day.  Several local recycling organizations offered public tours to give people a chance to learn more about what it takes.

"The programs we have in the Iowa City landfill and in the county are always expanding and always improving and we are getting new programs all the time.  With that being said, we are right at the state average for recycling, so we have a lot of room for improvement just like the rest of the state," said Iowa City Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Jordan.

Tours of City Carton Recycling and the Habitat Re-store followed Saturdays tour of the landfill.
