Marion and Mount Vernon Will Meet For 3A State Volleyball Title


CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL)--  Top-ranked Mount Vernon marched into the Class 3A finals for the second-straight year with a 25-14, 25-16, 25-14 victory Nevada in the Class 3A semifinals Friday afternoon.

The Mustangs will face Marion in the Class 3A championship Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Ali Stark had 11 kills and seven service aces to lead the Mustangs. Shelby Kintzel added nine for Mount Vernon.

Claire Bartelson had six kills for Nevada, who ends its year at 29-11.

For the first time in three years, there will be a new champion in Class 3A.

Second-ranked Marion rallied from a two-game deficit to knock off two-time defending state champion Sioux City Bishop Heelan, 22-25, 21-25, 27-25, 25-21, 17-15 in Class 3A semifinal action at the State Volleyball Tournament.

Marion advances to the 3A title game to face Mount Vernon or Nevada Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Brittney Thomas had 20 kills and 15 digs to lead the Indians while Sam Rhinehart added 14 kills and five blocks.

Sioux City Bishop Heelan received 20 kills from Baylee Strachen while Maggie Vondrak added 17. Carli Tritz had 11 kills and 29 digs for the Crusaders, who end the year 40-12.
