Iowa City West and Cedar Rapids Kennedy Advance at State Volleyball Tournament

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL)-- Third-ranked Iowa City West showed no state tournament jitters as they dispatched of Dubuque Hempstead 25-18, 25-19, 25-20, in Class 4A first round action at the 2008 State Volleyball Tournament.

Hempstead had no answer for the Women of Troy at the net, as Emma Krieger-Kittle knocked down 10 kills with five blocks to lead Iowa City West. Jessica Gehrke added nine kills with 18 digs and three ace serves. For the match, Iowa City West outblocked Hempstead, 15-8.

Heidi Splinter led Dubuque Hempstead with 10 kills and eight digs while Molly Dolson had five service aces for the Mustangs, who end their season at 34-5.

Iowa City West improves to 38-3.

Haley Brightwell had 22 kills and four blocks to lead Cedar Rapids Kennedy past Urbandale 25-16, 25-13, 23-25, 24-26, 15-9 in Class 4A first round action at the State Volleyball Tournament.

The Cougars waltzed to easy victories in the first two games only to see Urbandale rally from the brink of elimination to force a game five. Kennedy's front line defense forced the action in the deciding game, holding the J-Hawks to just four kills in the deciding game.

In addition to Brightwell's 22 kills, Kennedy had 14 service aces as a team, led by Morgan Guge's six. Kristen Hahn added 49 digs.

Urbandale's Margit Hansing had 12 kills to lead the J-Hawks, who end their season at 26-11.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy improves to 34-7 and will play Johnston Friday at 2:15 p.m.

Johnston's balanced attack proved to be too much for Cedar Rapids Prairie as the top-ranked Dragons advanced to the Class 4A semifinals with a 25-9, 25-14, 23-25, 25-19 victory over the Hawks.

Four Dragons reached double figures in kills, led by Abby Sonner's 13 and 25 digs. Tory Knuth added 12 kills with nine blocks while Taylor Knuth and Kate Nielsen both added 11.

Kaylee Schulte led Cedar Rapids Prairie with 11 kills and 16 digs.

Johnston improves to 39-1 and faces Cedar Rapids Kennedy in the 4A semifinals at 2:15 p.m. Friday.

Cedar Rapids Prairie ends its season at 29-7.
