Top Ranked Mount Vernon Rolls By Pella In State Volleyball

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL)--Top-ranked Mount Vernon's size proved to be too much for Pella to handle as the Mustangs rolled to a 25-8, 25-16, 25-8 victory over the Lady Dutch in Class 3A first round play at the State Volleyball Tournament Wednesday night.

Ali Stark's eight kills and six ace serves led Mount Vernon while Shelby Kintzel and Amanda Platte each added seven. Sarah Ryan had a team-high 11 digs. Hali Steenhoek and Brooke Fessler had three kills for Pella, who finished with 16 hitting errors and just 12 kills.

Mount Vernon faces Nevada Friday at 2:15 p.m. in the Class 3A semifinals. Pella ends its season at 28-9.

    The Iowa Hawkeye baseball team gave up a season high 13 runs in a 13-5 loss to Rutgers on Sunday afternoon. The Scarlet Knights took two out of the three games in the series against the Hawks. Rutgers pounded out 16 hits in the games and scored the first 10 runs in just four innings.
