Tornado responders win state award

PARKERSBURG (KWWL) -- On Thursday two eastern Iowa emergency agencies will be recognized for their response to the Parkersburg tornado.

Both the Parkersburg Emergency Response Team and Sartori Paramedics are receiving awards from the Iowa Emergency Medical Services Association.

Residents say after the tornado struck on May 25, Parkersburg EMS Responders put other's care above their own personal loss.

In addition, Sartori Paramedics served as a back up service, seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

"The tornado and the floods really showed people that, hey, things can happen and things can go wrong, and we need to take care of ourselves and take care of each other, and we do a really good job of it," Tammy Flechner, Parkersburg EMT volunteer said.

They will both receive their award Thursday in Des Moines.
