Two killed in Central Iowa crash

LUTHER (AP) -- Two people are dead and one person is injured after a head-on crash between a van and a pickup truck near Luther in central Iowa.

Officials with the Iowa State Patrol say a pickup truck driven by 22-year-old Raymond Grand Maitre, of Johnston, tried to pass a semitrailer on Iowa Highway 17 Tuesday morning and collided head-on with an oncoming van driven by 32-year-old Larry Hamor, of Tama.

Grand Maitre and Hamor were pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials with the patrol say a passenger in Hamor's van, 53-year-old Mark Patterson, of Tama, was taken to a Des Moines hospital. Patrol officials described Patterson's injuries as critical.
