Cerro Gordo officials back parking ticket plan

MASON CITY (AP) -- Motorists in Mason City and Clear Lake may soon face a choice: pay your parking tickets or stop driving.

The Cerro Gordo Board of Supervisors on Monday approved an agreement with the northern Iowa cities that will allow them to give the county treasurer's office a list of unpaid parking tickets. The county then would require that all fines and fees be paid before residents could buy license plates or renew their registrations.

The Clear Lake City Council has begun considering the agreement but the Mason City council hasn't taken up the matter.

Mason City Police Chief Mike Lashbrook says his department has more than 1,000 unpaid tickets.

Lashbrook says Clear Lake Police Chief Greg Peterson first suggested the idea.
