Hawks win sparks wild night

Iowa City (KWWL) -- Hawkeye fans stormed the field Saturday at Kinnick Stadium as the Iowa Hawkeyes knocked off #3 Penn State. But the party didn't stop at the stadium. The biggest win in recent memory sparked the biggest celebration in recent memory, too. That wild celebration has been anything but a party for police.

Iowa City Police say a perfect storm of factors contributed to a large number of arrests Saturday night through Sunday morning. Sgt. Troy Kelsay says the late start time sent many people to the bars right after the game. That combined with the dramatic finish meant one busy night for police.

"We dealt with a lot of intoxicated people, extremely intoxicated people," said Sgt. Kelsay with the Iowa City Police Department. "People that were passed out in bars, on park benches or actually literally stumbling or crawling down the street."

Kelsay says more than 70 people were in the Johnson County jail Sunday morning. A spokesman at the jail says a typical weekend morning sees closer to 25 or 30.
