Iowa City man pleads not guilty to murder over a chess game

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- An Iowa City man accused of killing his neighbor over a chess game pleaded not guilty.

29 year-old David Christian entered the plea Thursday on charges of second degree murder.

An investigation revealed Christian and Michael Alan Steward were in a verbal dispute over a chess game, which then escalated into physical fight. Christian told police that he wrapped his legs around Steward's neck and choked him until he was unconscious. Christian performed CPR on Steward but could not revive him. Emergency personnel took Steward to Mercy Hospital where he was declared dead.
