State commission meets to discuss flood recovery

WEST DES MOINES (AP) - The Rebuild Iowa Advisory Commission says early discussions about long-term disaster recovery include improved flood-plain mapping and restrictions on construction in flood-prone areas.

The 15-member commission, appointed by Gov. Chet Culver, met Thursday in West Des Moines.

The commission is working on a 120-day report for lawmakers considering flood recovery efforts during the new session in January. The report is scheduled to be presented to Culver by Nov. 17.

An earlier report that outlined immediate needs after this year's floods and tornadoes was delivered earlier this year.

The commission hopes to convince lawmakers to invest in long-term solutions although the immediate disasters have passed.

The meeting continues Friday.
