CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- The Cedar Rapids Xavier Saints are back in the state football quarterfinals for the third straight year. Our Athlete of the Week Steven Travis didn't become the team's starting quarterback until week 4 and the Saints are 7-1 since.
To get back to the quarterfinals, the Saints went through undefeated City High 27-3. Travis threw for touchdowns and ran for another in the win and called it the best feeling in the world.
Travis was expecting to play his senior year in the defensive backfield where he started as a junior. He lost a quarterback competition in the offseason but Head Coach Duane Schulte saw his signal-calling potential in the classroom. Travis is also a standout in two of Schulte's classes.
Steven credits his dad for teaching him how to play quarterback. He says his father isn't quite living out his dream through his son but he's certainly enjoying it.
