U of I gives safety tips after recent assaults

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- The University of Iowa is reminding students about safety after three recent reports of assaults near campus.

Thursday the interim vice president for Student Services, Thomas Rocklin, sent this message to students in an e-mail:

"I, and the rest of the university administration, are concerned about any threats to the safety of our students and to the entire iowa city population... While our university police continue to work with the Iowa City police department to respond to these and other crimes, we urge everyone to be vigilant and to adopt practices to enhance personal safety."

In his email, Rocklin offered these safety tips:

  • Don't walk alone, especially late at night or early in the morning.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts.
  • If you jog or cycle, vary your route and time, and stay on well-lit roads and main paths.
  • Don't talk on your cell phone or use a personal stereo, which can distract you.
