Nielsen: 71 million watched election night coverage

(KWWL) -- Estimates show more than 71 million Americans watched election night coverage as Barack Obama took the vote for president.  That number is Nielsen's estimate of the total amount of people tuning into ABC, CBS, FOX Broadcast, NBC, Telemundo, Univision, BBC America, BET, CNBC, CNN, FOX News Channel, MSNBC, and TV One.

Nielsen's audience estimates from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. (CST) shows the amount of viewers at 71,475,000.  That's a rating of 24.5 and a jump of about ten million over the elections of 2000 and 2004.

In the 2000 election, Nielsen reports 61.6 million people tuned in on election night.  In 2004, that number dropped slightly to 59.2 million.
