CORALVILLE (KWWL) -- After being shut down for almost five months, a Coralville business re-opened Tuesday.

Dave's Barber Shop closed its doors June 12 because of flooding.   After four decades, the owner thought about retiring, but decided he's still got a lot of haircutting left to do.

The sound of clippers, conversations and scissors once again fill dave's barber shop on the coralville strip. Dave Sondag opened this business forty years ago.

"I enjoying cutting hair," said Sondag.  "I enjoy people."

But after flooding forced him to close for several months, he thought about calling it quits.

"I thought about just hanging it up. My wife says I can't retire yet."

Sondag credits his wife and the rest of his family with getting the shop up and running again.

During the renovation, Sondag and his co-worker Mike Walker kept the business going.   Sondag cut customer's hair in his garage and walker used his house.  They're both glad to be back at the shop they call home.

Sondag says several of the businesses next to him closed or re-located, but he returned for his customers.

"There isn't too many of us left. We say we're dinosaurs, this type of barber shop. So try to keep it going till i become a dinosaur."

A gloomy and rainy afternoon didn't stop people from making it out early to the campgrounds Friday. By the afternoon, Scales Pointe Campground and Marina in North Liberty, was full of RVs, tents, and houseboats ready to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend. "We don't worry about the weather. We just put a tent up, put a poncho on, and drink in the rain," Mike Kirk said. Kirk said he's been camping at the same spot for five years now and that it's the best place to be. ...More >>
