Iowa officials predict huge election turnout

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Be patient at the polling places. That's the advice from Iowa election officials, who predict a turnout of 75% or more. That would top the 2004 level of 72%.

According to Secretary of State Michael Mauro, over 500,000 absentee ballots have already been returned.

The election marks the end of a marathon campaign in Iowa, where precinct caucuses last January launched the presidential nominating season. The premier race between Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama is the most competitive on the ballot.

Iowa voters will also decide races for U.S. senate, all five congressional districts and control of the Legislature.

Voters are also being asked if they want to remove the word "idiot" from the state's constitution when determining who's eligible to vote.
