Halloween means long night for Iowa City police

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- Halloween tends to be one of the busiest nights for police across the country. Combine college town, nice weather and Halloween falling on a weekend, and Iowa City police are preparing for any tricks that might fall outside the law.

Santa, Super Mario and Ronald McDonald were all out before sundown. Such is halloween in Iowa City.

It's pretty much the craziest party in the entire city," says Halloween party promoter Mendel Kurland.  He's getting ready for a party at the Union.

"We've had lines all the way down to the end of the block," says Kurland.

"We anticipate that it's going to be a little bit busier than our average weekend nights," says Doug Hart, with the Iowa City police.

Police aren't out to stop the fun. They just want people to be responsible, especially with so many kids crossing streets.

"We worry about alcohol consumption, making sure you're doing that responsibly and especially not drinking and driving," says Hart.

No need to call on any superheroes. Hart says police are ready.

"In my experience working on Halloweens in Iowa City and there's been several of 'em, they always went pretty smoothly," says Hart.

Despite all the headaches that might come with Halloween, Hart says that he and most of his fellow officers actually look forward to this night every year. Let's just hope those words don't come back to haunt him.
