Anamosa inmates assault jail staff

ANAMOSA (KWWL) -- Two inmates assualted three staff members Tuesday afternoon.

Here the information sent out by the state: Shortly after 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday October 28, 2008 the Anamosa Penitentiary was placed in a lockdown status following the assault on three security staff by two inmates.

Following an institution count, Inmate Eric Wagenknecht, assigned to living unit B, became upset and assaulted a stationed unit security staff person. Upon arrival of two additional security staff, Inmate Joshua George became involved with the scuffle and assaulted both responding staff.

Both inmates were quickly restrained and placed in administrative segregation pending investigation.

The three security staff were treated at Jones County Regional Medical Center and released.

Wagenknecht is 31 years old and serving a five year sentence from Johnson County for Willful Injury. This sentence began on March 28, 2007. Wagenknecht was transferred to ASP on August 13, 2008.

George is serving a life sentence from Franklin County for First Degree Murder, Kidnapping 3rd, Degree and Robbery 1st Degree. This sentence began on April 28, 1997. George was transferred to ASP on June 20, 1997 and was transferred to the Iowa State Penitentiary at Fort Madison following this incident.

The Department is unable to release the names of the security staff that were assaulted.
