Friend of Michelle Kehoe stunned by murder charge

Iowa City (KWWL) -- Family and friends of Michelle Kehoe are trying to figure out how a woman they saw as a loving mother could be charged with killing her own child.

Brooke Rath got to know the Kehoe family after her husband helped rescue Michelle and her two sons from the Iowa River last December.

"We were just overwhelmed by what a wonderful family this was," Rath says.

The Rath's had the Kehoe's over for dinner a couple weeks after the December rescue. Brooke says she saw a special relationship between mother and child.

"Seth is just so bonded to Mom and he looked at her with all the hope and light you'd expect to see in a child," Rath says.

She says it's hard to fathom the same boy was allegedly murdered by his mother.

"I think that's shocking," says Rath.  "It seems like something that she was not capable of. She's just a sweet, sweet, sweet lady."

The Kehoe family spokesperson says the family has been very supportive of one another during this difficult time.

"The family is doing as well as can be expected," Franklin says.  "They're asking people at this point to respect their privacy. Their focus really is on completing the visitation and Seth's burial."

Despite everything that's happened, Brooke Rath says it won't change how she'll view the Kehoe's.

"I still will feel like they're just a wonderful, wonderful family and very devoted to each other," Rath says.

Seth's older brother, Sean, is out of the hospital and recovering at home. Franklin says he is doing as well as can be expected.
