University of Iowa Hospitals to cut $25 million

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - University of Iowa Hospitals will cut its spending by $25 million to balance its budget.

The hospital's chief financial officer, Ken Fisher, says expenses are 16.5% higher than last year and 2% over budget. He discussed the hospital's budget with the Iowa Board of Regents on Wednesday.

Fisher says the increased costs are, in part, the result of hiring more staff to work in expanded units and a rise in indigent patients, for whom the hospital doesn't get reimbursed from the state.

Hospital CEO Ken Kates says the hospital plans to cut $3.1 million in each of the remaining eight months of the fiscal year by not filling some vacant positions, reducing hourly positions and cutting some nonpersonnel expenses.
