Quick second half start propels City High to substate win

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- Playing without starting tailback Eric Washpun, Iowa City High overcame a slow start on offense to get by Davenport Assumption, 24-10 in the substate round of the high school football playoffs.

Washpun injured his knee in practice on Sunday and spent the night in street clothes on the sideline.  The senior's status for the remainder of the playoffs is unclear.

In his absence, the Little Hawks offense struggled at the start.  Despite the defense forcing two first quarter turnovers, City High led just 3-0 at the end of one quarter.

In the 2nd, Assumption tied the score on a 37-yard field goal by Jay Golden.

City High responded with its first touchdown drive of the game capped off by an A.J. Derby 14-yard run.  The Little Hawks led 10-3 at the half.

City High began to pull away in the 3rd.  On the Little Hawks' opening drive of the 2nd half, Derby hit John Chelf for a 13-yard touchdown to up the cushion to 17-3.

After forcing a three and out, Derby connected with David Koehnke on a 15-yard score to make it 24-3.  The Little Hawks held on for the 24-10 win.

Iowa City will host Cedar Rapids Xavier in the first round of the 4A playoffs on Monday, November 3rd.
