West Delaware Stuns Marion 35-2

MARION (KWWL) -- Wednesday night Marion was hoping to shake the ghosts of recent postseason pasts.

But an 8-1 regular season mark couldn't help the Indians stop a scary West Delaware offensive attack nor their playoff losing streak as they fell 35-2.

And it didn't take long for things to get out of hand.

On the shoulders of senior tailback Ben McDonald, it took West Delaware just three plays to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish.  McDonald capped off the opening drive with a seven yard touchdown run to put the Hawks up 7-0.

On West Delaware's third series, McDonald got in the endzone from 14 yards out, making it 14-0 in the first quarter.  The senior rushed for 82 yards on 11 touches in the first half, helping his team distance itself from the favorite Marion.

Marion looked to gain some momentum when Corey Kramer intercepted Dan Marshall in the endzone and returned it 56 yards into Hawks territory.

But the Indian offense was never able to get going, and when Dan Marshall hit Devon Alber for a 12 yard score right before the half, Marion found itself in a 21-0 hole at the break.

McDonald added his third touchdown of the night in the second half.  West Delware will host Decorah next Monday in second round action.
