Iowa National Guard Commander retiring

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Major General Ron Dardis, who has been member of the Iowa National Guard for nearly 43 years, plans to retire as the Guard's adjutant general.

Gov. Chet Culver announced Dardis' retirement on Tuesday. Culver says no specific date has been set. Dardis will remain on duty until a new adjutant general has been named and a suitable transition period can be completed.

The 65-year-old Sioux City native has held the post of adjutant general since June 1999, when he was appointed by then Gov. Tom Vilsack.

Culver was effusive in his praise for Dardis, calling him a hero whose calm under pressure has served the state and nation well for years.
