Sex Offender stickers handed out for Halloween

Cedar Rapids (KWWL) -- In an effort to protect trick-or-treaters from sex offenders this halloween -- Cedar Rapids Police are taking a unique approach.

Officers are handing out a sticker to every registered sex offender in the city showing a jack-o-lantern reading "No Candy Here". Police ask that registered sex offenders place the sticker on their door for halloween and keep their lights off. However -- police cannot require sex offenders to use the sticker.

Other Safety Tips to keep in mind include:

-Wear a costume that makes it easy to be seen or is reflective.

-Carry a flashlight so you can see and be seen.

-Wear face paint instead of a mask.

-Have a parent or older sibling go Trick-or-Treating with small children.

-Go Trick-or-Treating in your own neighborhood or to homes that you know.

-Inspect all candy prior to eating. If the candy looks like it has been tampered with, throw it away. Neither hospital is x-raying candy that we are aware of.

-Respect homes that do not have lights on or have a "No Candy Here" sign.
