Cyclone basketball team ready to go "all-in"

Posted:

Ames, Iowa -- Inexperience is the name of the game for the Iowa State men's basketball team following several key departures including the unexpected loss of forward Wesley Johnson.  But in Greg McDermott's 3rd year at the helm the Cyclones still have high hopes.

The Iowa State players met the media Monday for the first time with a new attitude about giving everything you've got and leaving nothing behind, and they can owe it all to a slogan borrowed from the World Series of Poker.

"During the course of watching that, one of the players decided to go all in, and as I was thinking about that, I felt like that made great sense for our team," says McDermott, "if we're going to be successful this year, we've got to have everybody from our coaching staff to our support staff to every individual on our team that's willing to invest everything they have."

"He was talking to us and he said he was trying to find a slogan, so we turned it to the poker channel and the first thing they said was ‘all in,'" recalls starting point guard Diante Garrett, "and that's the first thing that click in his head.  ‘All in, that's what we are'"
