Cyclones basketball turn to youngsters

AMES, Iowa (AP) - Iowa State should make a killing off of scorecards this season. That's because the Cyclones' roster is again full of newcomers.

Iowa State has just one scholarship senior, Alex Thompson, and two returning starters, forward Craig Brackins and point guard Bryan Petersen, back for the 2008-09 season.

Cyclones coach Greg McDermott says that while he would like to have more veterans on the team, he believes the team has a solid core of young players. McDermott says the challenge for the coaching staff is to help those players develop.

Iowa State has brought in five freshmen, along with junior-college transfer Jamie Vanderbeken.

The Cyclones, who finished 14-18 last season, opens their season against UC-Davis on Nov. 14.
