City High survives scare to cap off perfect regular season, 33-23

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- Iowa City High rallied with 21 unanswered points in the 2nd half to beat Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 33-23.

The Little Hawks struck first in the 1st on a 31-yard touchdown pass from A.J. Derby to Nick Reuter.  City High's extra point failed keeping the score 6-0.

On City High's next possession, Eric Washpun found the end zone from 15 yards out.  The ensuing 2-point conversion fell short, making the Little Hawk lead, 12-0.

That's when Jefferson used a roll of the dice to get back in the game.  Going for it on 4th and 15 from the City High 20, Drew Higgins rolled out and hit Ben Swenson for the touchdown, cutting the Little Hawk lead to 12-7.

Late in the 2nd, the J-Hawks were faced with another 4th down decision.  On 4th and goal from the 1, Higgins found a wide open Eric Kleinheinz for the go-ahead touchdown.  Jefferson's ensuing 2-point conversion made it a 15-12 halftime lead.

It marked one of the few times City High had trailed all season.  And it didn't last long.  Midway through the 3rd, Washpun scored his second rushing touchdown of the night to put City High up for good, 19-15.

The Little Hawks put it away in the 4th with a Derby 57-yard touchdown run followed by a Washpun 70-yard scoring burst.

City High wins the Mississippi Division of the MVC with an undefeated 9-0 record.  Jefferson ends the regular season 4-5, but still qualifies for the playoffs for the first time since 2000.
