Charges filed in Iowa pig abuse

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Greene County authorities say six farm workers have been charged with animal abuse and neglect in connection with a video that shows pigs being abused.

The investigation came after People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals released video last month of workers at a farm in Bayard abusing pigs, including hitting sows with metal rods and slamming piglets on a concrete floor.

The farm is owned by MowMar Farms of Fairmont, Minnesota, and supplies Hormel Foods of Austin, Minnesota.

Sheriff Tom Heater says warrants have been issued for the half dozen workers who are facing various charges which include livestock abuse, aiding and abetting livestock abuse and livestock neglect.

PETA had sought the prosecution of 18 people on animal cruelty violations.

Heater says four of the workers are no longer employed at the farm, while two others continue to work there.

MowMar officials say an internal investigation is continuing and it has promised reforms.
