Furnace checks keep you safe and save you money

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) Inspecting the inside of a furnace is nothing new for Scott Knight with Dalton Plumbing, Heating and Cooling.

During a maintenance inspection, Knight makes sure the furnace is safe and reliable. He checks the filter, tests the operation of the furnace and performs a heating exchanger inspection. One of his inspections helped prevent possible carbon monoxide poisoning.

"I was doing the routine annual heat exchanger inspection and found a crack in two of the three cells of the heat exchanger. I don't like to be the bearer of bad news, but from a safety standpoint it was essential for me to tell the customer," said Knight.

Knight recommends yearly furnace inspections. Done by a professional.

"If a novice tries to do it, it can cause a lot of problems," said Knight.

But the homeowner should be responsible for checking and changing the filter as needed.

"Routine scheduled maintenance is important. Everybody does it on their cars, but they forget about equipment that is for their comfort and well being. Their heater, air conditioner, water heater," he said.

Knight understands inspections cost money, but said it will actually save you money in the long run. That's because inspections can make your furnace run more efficiently, and if you catch a potential problem early it can cost less to fix.

But Knight said the number one reason to have your furnace inspected is safety.
