Cedar Rapids firm will build houses on city land

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - The city and a local building firm are teaming up to build houses in Cedar Rapids for 11 families flooded out of their homes last June.

The Skogman Construction Company will break ground on the project Monday afternoon and could complete the first houses by January. The houses will be built on vacant land donated by the city.

Company president Kyle Skogman says the houses will be built in an area outside flood zones.

City spokeswoman Cassie Willis says the project is 1 of the first in the city's plan to find housing for flooded-out residents.
